HSL's bus driving down the road

VR FleetCare to install networking equipment into HSL busses for improved passenger comfort

The contract signed in April covers the renewal of the ticket reading equipment and vehicle routers. The aim is to improve passenger comfort and to ensure working data connections.

Rolling stock maintenance company VR FleetCare is expanding its expertise by carrying out the installment of networking equipment into HSL busses. The contract covers the planning and installment work with new ticket readers and vehicle routers, including the cabling, wiring, and testing that ensure the functionality of the equipment.

In total, new equipment will be installed into over 1650 busses. The installation work begins in April and the project will be complete early in 2024. All work will be done at the home depot of the vehicles.

We are very excited to start installing new equipment into the vehicles, as it will help ensure better customer service. This is a big and important thing for us. The easiness and quality of the installments are important for both us and the operator, so we think that a good partner is the key to success with this project.
Petteri Huppunen, Head of Development Unit at HSL

VR FleetCare has carried out several networking equipment installments with rolling stock during the past years, accumulating experience. Now this competence will be put to use in the vehicle segment as well. Vehicle maintenance is already a part of VR FleetCare’s operations in Tampere, where maintenance work includes electrical busses in addition to freight wagons.

"This is an amazing start for our networking equipment installment operations on busses. We already have expertise in system upgrades and renewals with rolling stock," says Peter Guldbrand, Vice President, Commercial at VR FleetCare.

"We will carry out the installment processes in cooperation with our subcontractor network. Both the installment work and also project management experience we are accumulating will help us develop our project business models and enable growth," Guldbrand concludes.
